What's the Difference Between a Sports Massage and a Regular Massage?

Sports massage differs from normal massage in its focus, technique, and intention.

A sports massage is a type of therapeutic massage created with the goal of assisting athletes and active people in preventing and treating injuries. The massage therapist manipulates the body’s soft tissues using a range of techniques with the goal to increase flexibility, reduce pain and discomfort, improve range of motion and hasten healing.

Sports massage will focus on a specific part of the body that is in need of healing and relief making it much more targeted in its approach and technique. Specialist modalities are used during sports massage to provide relief from injury and muscle tension, making it much more advanced than a standard massage.

On the other hand, a regular massage, such as a Swedish full-body massage, are normally used to relax the muscles and increase circulation. The needs of athletes and those who are active are not specifically catered to, however it can be helpful for relaxation and stress alleviation.
